EXCERPT FROM THE DAY THE RAINS CAME: AN ANNOTATED TIMELINE OF THE DELUGE

IT HAS TO be noted that the mainstream media holds some culpability in much of the panic that ensued around the globe. The sensationalistic nature of news programs vying for higher ratings than competitors led them to report events that should not have been reported until further information or corroboration was achieved. Once news began to spread on social media about the death of Orlando Granger and the illness of the Long Island City High School students, responsible media would have held off reporting about these incidents until they had evidence that these events were directly connected to the Deluge. However, in a race to be the first to report any scrap of information, no matter how tenuous, such caution was neglected. Yes, it is true that these reports largely included caveats that no one had definitively made a connection between the death/sickness and the rain, but by reporting them at all in conjunction with stories about the Deluge, a correlation was suggested that took root in the minds of people throughout the world.

By the time it was proven that the death of Granger and the illness of the high school students were not caused by the rain, the damage had been done and suspicion and paranoia were not so easily disarmed. In fact, some news organizations (FOX News being chief among them) continued to urge people to take extreme caution. That in and of itself is not bad advice, but the rhetoric became vitriolic as it suggested anyone exposed to the rain be removed from the company of ‘the clean’. Even the President of the United States, who had previously downplayed the Deluge, switched gears and began talking about needing to draw a firm line between ‘the clean’ and ‘the soiled’, as he put it in a televised press conference.

2:40pm

Lisa checked the cell screen and saw that her battery was nearly dead. Not altogether surprising; she hadn’t charged it since sometime the day before yesterday, and she’d been on the phone with her father since this whole mess had started.

“Daddy, I’m scared,” she said softly into the phone. She had isolated herself from the others that had been isolated here in the corner, a quarantine within quarantine. She sat on a wide windowsill next to a wire basket full of stuffed knights.

“Baby, I wish like hell I could be there with you, but don’t be scared. No one has found anything harmful in the rain.”

A yet hung unsaid, but Lisa didn’t comment on it. Instead she said, “Tell that to the people here in the store with me. They still have us shoved off away from everyone else.”

“But they’re not forcing you, right?”

“Well, no. I mean, we’re here voluntarily, but if one of us decided we didn’t want to stay over here anymore, I don’t know what might happen.”

“Just keep your head down. I’m sure this will be cleared up soon and we can get back to normal.
